Palo Alto's Nick Ortiz (112) and Gunn's Stefan Weidemann (140) both captured individual titles at the prestigious two-day Coast Classic that wrapped up Saturday at Scotts Valley High. Ortiz, along with Max Simon (third at 160), helped the Vikings finish 11th in the team standings.
Ortiz, the No. 5 seed, had a first-round bye. He pinned Jason Moser of Carmel in just 40 seconds in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Ortiz decisioned Josh Plotzke of Trinity, 10-3, and in the semifinals he decisions George Sakkas of Cupertino, 8-6. In the title match, Ortiz won by a pin over Jonas Tirado (Kingsburg) in 2:33.
Weidemann won all five matches on his way to the title, including a fall in the finals over his opponent from Los Gatos. In all, Weidemann secured two falls, two technical falls and a major decision on his way to the title. Gunn placed 19th in the 40-team tournament and has produced at least one champion in this event four out of the past five years.
Simon was the No. 6 seed. He pinned Ryan Sarmiento (Palma) at 5:28 in the first round before posting a 10-1 major decision over Steven Cox (Placer) in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Simon lost a 15-5 major decision to Gurmukh Singh (Cupertino). That dropped Simon into the consolation round, where he decisioned Tyler Hernandez (Silver Creek), 10-8. That was followed by a pin over Ernesto Ceja (Madera South) in 3:36. In the consolation semifinal, Simon pinned Dylan Keel (Santa Cruz) in 4:18 and in the third-place match, Simon decisioned Eric Ochoa of King City, 6-5.
