Senior Ethan Plant scored twice to give the Palo Alto boys' soccer team its first victory of the season, a 2-0 nonleague triumph over visiting Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday. Plant scored in the first half off a pass from John Richardson. The Vikings made it 2-0 before halftime when Plant scored his second goal off a pass from Jenner Fox as Paly improved to 1-1-3.
Paly had a very strong first half with its two goals and two near misses while out-shooting the Bears, 8-1. Plant had a standout game with two near goals in addition to his two scored.
The second half was more evenly played with both teams having five shots on goal. M-A had one shot broken up by a diving Paly keeper Scott Alexander. The Vikings conclude 2009 with a scrimmage with Woodside on Thursday, a Homestead Christmas Cup Tournament match with Lincoln on Saturday at Oak Grove High in San Jose at 5 p.m. Paly also will play in the tournament on Monday.
