Varsity Boys Water Polo
Menlo-Atherton 3, Palo Alto 2
Date of competition: Saturday, November 17, 2007
The Menlo-Atherton boys' water polo team captured its first-ever Central Coast Section title in the sport with a 3-2 triumph over No. 2 Palo Alto on Saturday at Independence High in San Jose. The Bears (19-10) got two goals from senior Matt Bogott and the winning goal from senior Kevin Lane with 5:45 left in the match. Both teams had numerous chances after that, but M-A senior goalie Alex Popp and Paly senior goalie Will Simon both were outstanding and denied shot after shot. Simon, in fact, blocked two 5-meter penalty shots by Bogott to keep the Vikings (19-8) in the defense-dominated game until the very end.
