The Menlo School football team saw its shot at a first-ever Central Coast Section championship disappear in a 56-35 shellacking at the hands of top-seeded Carmel in the Division IV title game Saturday at Westmont High in Campbell. The No. 2-seeded Knights (9-4) were unable to keep pace with the high-powered Padres (12-0), who simply had too much explosive speed to contend with, despite the fact that Menlo senior quarterback Danny Diekroeger threw for a career-high 470 yards and four touchdowns. That effort gave him 4,179 yards this season, a Bay Area record that ranks him No. 2 in the state this year.
