The Palo Alto and Bellarmine football teams met for the first time in 65 years on Friday night. The host Vikings probably felt they could have waited another year or two after the No. 5-seeded Bells handed No. 4 Paly a 34-6 loss in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. Palo Alto, which came into the game averaging 33 points a game, ended its season at 7-2-2 while the Bells advanced to the semifinals with a 9-1-1 record.

It was a night for the underdogs in the Open Division as No. 6 St. Francis pounded No. 3 Palma, 45-7, and No. 7 Valley Christian upset No. 2 Mitty, 22-17.

Palo Alto head coach Earl Hansen knew Bellarmine would run the ball, but not as well as the Bells did. As it turned out, it was too well. The Bells piled up 445 yards on the ground and ran away from the Vikings. Palo Alto did hold Bellarmine to just 35 yards passing, but the Bells aren’t a passing team and Hansen knew it. Bellarmine dares teams to stop its run game. On Friday, Palo Alto couldn’t.
