In a match that was much closer than expected, the Menlo School boys' water polo team escaped with a 7-6 victory over Soquel in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday night at Monta Vista High. The No. 2-seeded Knights (22-6) beat No. 3 Soquel (17-7) earlier in the year by a wider margin, but this time Menlo had its hands full.

Menlo earned its 11th trip to the CCS championship Game in 12 years and will play defending champ and No. 1 seed Sacred Heart Prep on Saturday (11:30 a.m.) at Santa Clara University in a rematch of last year's title game.

Menlo junior John Holland-McCowan anchored the center position, drawing seven major fouls, while sophomore goalie Connor Dillon stepped up to shut down Soquel while blocking nearly 70 percent of its shot attempts behind the swarm-style defense that had Chris Akin, Jack Finch, and Nick Hale all with three steals each. Akin, a senior, and Hale, a sophomore, also scored three goals each.
