Palo Alto 34, Los Gatos 12
Date of competition: Friday, October 30, 2009
Junior quarterback T.J. Braff threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns with senior speedster Maurice Williams scoring on two long electrifying plays to spark host Palo Alto to a very big 34-12 SCVAL De Anza Diviion victory over Los Gatos in a homecoming game Friday night.
The victory puts the Vikings (3-0-1, 6-1-1) in control of the division race as it knocked the Wildcats (3-1, 6-2) out of sole possession of first. Paly has only Mountain View and Wilcox standing in the way of a league title while Los Gatos still has to play Milpitas. Thus, it's Paly's title to lose.
The Vikings made sure they won their first homecoming game against Los Gatos this decade with a quick-strike offense and a pressure defense. The Wildcats were held to just 40 yards rushing. And, despite the fact that starting quarterback Nick Hirschman did not play, backup Hayden Hibberd threw for 215 yards. That, however, was not even close to getting the job done against Palo Alto.
Holding a tenuous 7-6 lead, Paly held Los Gatos on its opening possession of the third quarter and took over on its own 5-yard line. Three plays later, Braff hooked up with Williams on a 95-yard touchdown. Three plays following the kickoff, Paly's Joc Pederson intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards to the Los Gatos 21. Pederson wound up having to attempt a 36-yard field goal, but was roughed on the play and Paly took over again. Three plays and a holding call later, Braff plunged over from the 1-yard line for a 21-6 lead.
Los Gatos ran four more plays before fumbling the ball away. Paly took possession at the 50. Braff handed to Williams on a reverse and the speedy Williams ran through the Los Gatos defense for a 50-yard score and 27-6 lead. The Wildcats scored again with 1:49 left in the game, but Braff hooked up with Pederson for a second TD connection, this time from 49 yards out and Paly had its first homefield victory over Los Gatos since 1995.
