Varsity Girls Water Polo
Menlo-Atherton 9, Castilleja 1
Date of competition: Monday, October 26, 2009
The Menlo-Atherton girls' water polo team successfully defended its PAL Bay Division regular-season title with a dominating 9-1 victory over second-place Castilleja on Monday in Atherton. The Bears, ranked No. 1 in the Central Coast Section, improved to 11-0 in league (18-1 overall) while the Gators fell to 9-2 (12-7).
Both teams have one match remaining on Wednesday -- Castilleja hosting Menlo and M-A visiting Aragon. The Bears and Gators will finish one-two and take those seeds into the league tournament that begins next week in the Bears' pool. Castilleja and M-A likely will meet again in the finals on Nov. 7.
After holding off Castilleja in their first meeting, 9-5, the Bears figured to be in for another toughie. It looked that way in the first half when M-A managed a single goal by senior Vanessa Lane in the first quarter and held just a 4-0 halftime lead. M-A, however, took advantage of its counter and man advantages to score four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take control of the game at 8-0. Lane scored her third goal on a tip-pass from fellow senior Sarah Winters for a 5-0 lead. Winters then scored off an assist from senior Becca Dorst, junior MJ O'Neill scored off another assist from Dorst and Dorst finally scored herself.
M-A coach Chris Rubin surprisingly was able to clear his bench and get every one of his 13 players some water time. That has been the case often this season.
