Varsity Boys Football
Menlo 42, San Mateo 34
Date of competition: Friday, October 23, 2009
With senior quarterback Danny Diekroeger throwing for a career-high 450 yards and five touchdowns on 28 of 49 completions, the Menlo football team kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 42-34 PAL Ocean Division victory at San Mateo on Friday afternoon. The two teams combined for 76 points, 965 yards of total offense and 22 penalties for 185 yards. Menlo improved to 1-2 in league (4-3 overall) against the Bearcats (1-1, 4-3).
Ironically, it was Menlo’s defense — torched many times this season — that finally came up with a game-saving play. San Mateo had a first-and-goal from the Menlo 8-yard line with 10.6 seconds remaining. Menlo’s Mafileo Tupou sacked quarterback Mitch Labbie for a five-yard loss. San Mateo was unable to get another play and Menlo had its crucial victory.
Diekroeger completed 17 of 27 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns in just the first half on his way to his career day. The Knights converted at least one fourth down on five of their six touchdown drives. Clay Robbins finished with seven receptions for 169 yards while Tim Benton had eight catches for 134 yards.
