The Menlo-Atherton boys’ water polo team had a tough opening day in the North-South Challenge co-hosted by the Bears and Sacred Heart Prep. In the first match they ran into a buzz saw from Carlsbad (North San Diego County) as the Lancers jumped out to a 7-1 first period lead. M-A’s Graham McClelland scored first but 5 different Carlsbad players found the cage in the quarter. The Bears played close the rest of the way but were still outscored 10-6 in the final 3 stanzas for a final score of 16-7. Senior Jed Springer once again led M-A with 4 goals and goalie Alex Gow recorded 6 blocked shots. In the evening match the Bears fought a tough battle with Miramonte from across the bay. M-A held the Matadors to a 1-0 lead after the first period but allowed four 2nd quarter goals before freshman Zach Deal found the top right corner for the first Bear score. M-A matched Miramonte goal for goal the rest of the way but could not close the gap. Team captain Eric Wright scored 3 times in the 4th period to lead the Bears and Alex Gow had another outstanding game turning back 9 shots. Nick Deaver led the Matadors with 4 tallies.
