Menlo quarterback Danny Diekroeger threw for 350 yards, but the Knights' defense couldn't match that standout effort in a 41-21 loss to host South San Francisco on Friday night to open the PAL Ocean Division season. South City used 12 different defensive coverages to stop the Knights (0-1, 3-2). While Diekroeger still managed his big game, which included two TD passes, Menlo was limited elsewhere in just one of many showdowns in the tough division that saw all six teams with winning nonleague records.

The Warriors took control of a back-and-forth game -– there were five lead changes in the first three quarters -– through four Menlo turnovers. All resulted in SSF touchdowns. In the second half, Diekroeger was sacked twice and suffered two interceptions as South City grabbed the momentum.
