Varsity Boys Water Polo
Menlo 10, Menlo-Atherton 6
Date of competition: Monday, September 21, 2009
The Menlo School boys' water polo team grabbed early control of the PAL Bay Division race with a 10-6 victory over host Menlo-Atherton on Monday. The Knights improved to 2-0 in league (5-2 overall) while the Bears fell to 2-1 (4-3).
Both teams were coming off 2-2 showings at last weekend's Scott Roche Invitational and, not too surprisingly, looked a bit tired at times. Menlo, however, had its swarming defense working and had plenty of offense from junior John Holland McCowan (three goals), senior Jack Foley (two goals) and junior Jack Finch (two goals).
Menlo-Atherton's 6-foot-9 senior Jed Springer tallied four goals to lead the Bears. He missed a five-meter penalty shot in the second quarter, but grabbed the rebound off the post and fired it back in to bring the Bears to within 5-4. At that point, Menlo responded with three unanswered goals from sophomore Nick Hale, Holland-McCowan and Foley for an 8-4 halftime lead.
The teams matched goals in the third and fourth quarters as the Knights kept a comfortable lead.
