The Palo Alto girls' tennis team will be playing catchup the remainder of the SCVAL De Anza Division season following a 5-2 upset loss to visiting Homestead on Thursday. The Vikings (1-1, 5-3) had been expected to battle Monta Vista and Saratoga for league honors this season, but Homestead threw a big monkey wrench into those potential plans with its surprising victory.

All Paly coach Andy Harader could say was it was "a disappointing loss for us."

The Vikings' No. 1 singles player, junior Janet Liu, did not play for unspecified reasons. Liu, however, has been allowed to skip matches when the outcome isn't in doubt, like in Tuesday's 6-1 division-opening win over Lynbrook. On Thursday, however, Liu should have been in the lineup -- if she was healthy -- because the Vikings lost three of four singles matches, a team strength this season.

Sophie Biffar and Gracie Dulik each went to three sets at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, while losing. Paly, in fact, won the first set in two matches before losing both. Only Mira Khanna at No. 2 singles and the team of Emily Efland and Margo Gerould at No. 2 doubles were able to pull out victories.
