Playing Pinewood seems like the right thing to do for the Gunn girls' tennis team. A year ago the Titans opened their 2008 season by beating the Panthers, but then lost their next 20 matches and finished the season 1-20. On Wednesday, Gunn notched its first triumph of the 2009 season with a 7-0 romp over visiting Pinewood. The Titans are now 1-2 and not looking for a repeat of last year's disastrous season.

Gunn took a very positive step forward by winning all seven matches in straight sets. Allana Booth, Mari Haraguchi, Alice Li and Holly Xiao all won their singles matches fairly quickly even though Haraguchi was forced to a second-set tiebreaker.

Gunn hopes to take some momentum from its victory into the two-day California High School Classic in Clovis on Friday and Saturday. The Titans will be joined by Palo Alto (2-0), which blanked visiting Notre Dame-San Jose on Wednesday, 7-0, in a nonleague match. Also competing will be Menlo School (1-0).
