Sacred Heart Prep opened its 2009 boys' water polo season on the wrong foot against the top team from the East Bay, dropping a 10-8 double-overtime loss to visiting Acalanes on Wednesday.

The Gators fell behind by 3-1 after one quarter but tied it at 4 by halftime. Acalanes retook the lead at 7-5 after three quarters before the Gators knotted things at 8 following regulation. The teams then played two mandatory overtime periods, but SHP failed to find the net and suffered the defeat as Acalanes scored twice.

Robert Dunlevie and David Culpan each scored three goals for the Gators while Philip Bamberg contributed two. Senior goalie Ben Dearborn had 10 saves for SHP. All four players competed for the Stanford Water Polo Club at the Junior Olympics this summer. Dunlevie, Culpan and Dearborn helped the 18-under team win the bronze while Bamberg played for the 16-under team that took home the silver in the national tournament.
