Menlo 15, Serra 8
Date of competition: Wednesday, September 9, 2009
Menlo opened its 2009 season with a 15-8 nonleague triumph over visiting Serra on Wednesday evening.
The victory for Menlo improved its streak of winning season-opening matches to 10. As is the case in most seasons, the Knights used a swarming defense to smother the visiting Padres. Jack Foley and Nick Hale sparked the defense, with Hale registering three steals.
Goalie Keegan Williams had 12 saves and helped trigger Menlo's counter attack. His passing out of the cage helped John Holland-McCowan score five goals while Hale added three goals. Chris Akin and Jack Finch added two goals while Luke Carrino finished with three assists.
Menlo will open its PAL Bay Division season next Wednesday against visiting Woodside at 4 p.m., and then will host the annual Roche Tournament on Sept. 18-19.
