Playing Wilcox in its season opener perhaps was not the best idea for Menlo-Atherton on Friday night. After all, Wilcox had lost to the Bears in the 2008 Central Coast Section Large School Division finals and certainly wanted some payback, which the Chargers got in a 45-0 nonleague thrashing of M-A.

The Chargers outgained the Bears 284-36 in the first half as they built a 32-0 lead. M-A first-year coach Tony Rosso's team was overwhelmed at the line of scrimmage, despite returning nearly every top lineman from last season.

The Bears' best scoring opportunity came on a first-half kickoff return when Abraham Simon lost his balance at his 40-yard line with an open field in front of him and fell to the ground. Quarterback Michael Culhane couldn't get the Bears' new spread-option offense going. He finished 6-for-12 passing for 66 yards with two interceptions.

M-A's defense made adjustments in the second half and held Wilcox to one offensive touchdown after surrendering five in the first half. Alofangia Sakalia was singled out by Rosso for his hustle and intensity. M-A beat Wilcox 39-33 in last year's title game.
