Fighting to keep their hopes of a second straight appearance in the Babe Ruth World Series alive, the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 15-year-old all stars clawed their way toa 5-4 win over Torrance in the Pacific Southwest Regional tournament in Ukiah. The win forced a challenge match between Palo Alto and Torrance for the regional title later Monday night.
Palo Alto entered the bottom of the seventh tied 4-4, and managed to get the winning run in to force the challenge game.
Tucker Jorgensen led off the seventh with a single. Jorgensen advanced to second on a hit-and-run groundout by Travis McHugh. After another groundout and a walk, Drake Swezey delivered the clutch base hit to score Jorgensen and win the game.
Swezey's hit was one of two RBI base hits in the game for him. B.J. Boyd also had two hits in the game and drove in one run. McHugh and Jordan Piha both had RBI base hits as well.
Not only did Swezey come through with the game-winning hit, he also pitched a complete game for Palo Alto, and thanks to his own efforts, got the win.
Swezey was backed up by some nice defense by Palo Alto, which turned two double plays in the game. Christian Lonsky also picked a runner off at first from catcher on a fake bunt.
