The Palo Alto Oaks moved to within a game of qualifying for the West Region in Los Angeles, but fell to league rival Fontanetti's, 3-0, in the semifinals of the Stan Musial Division NorCal State Tournament at UC Davis on Saturday. In the fourth round, the games were extended to nine innings. Facing league rival Fontanetti's seemed to be a good opportunity for the Oaks, having played them already several times this season. However, Pat McCain shut out the Oaks for eight innings and a relief pitcher shut the Oaks down in the ninth. Joe Ramirez made the start for the Oaks and did not give up any runs until the fifth when Fontanetti's scored twice. The San Jose-based team could have scored another run, but Evan Warner scooped up a single up the middle and threw out Greg Mugg, who tried to score from second to end the inning. Fontanetti's scratched out another run in the sixth to make the final score 3-0.

The Oaks will continue play the next two weeks at home. First up are the Alameda Dirtdogs and then the El Cerrito A's come to Baylands Athletic Center for the season-ending series. In the final series, Gabe Duran will play in his last game as an Oak. He'll officially retire after 10 seasons with the Oaks.
