The Palo Alto Oaks moved to within a game of qualifying for the West Region in Los Angeles, but fell to league rival Fontanetti's, 3-0, in the semifinals of the Stan Musial Division NorCal State Tournament at UC Davis on Saturday.

Palo Alto, which won its opener on Friday, got a solid pitching effort from Matt Campbell in Game 2 on Saturday to beat the NorCal Longhorns, 3-0. Campbell gave up just five hits and struck out nine batters in the seven-inning contest.

The Oaks scored all three runs in the sixth inning when Warner led off by being hit by a pitch. Jeff Ramirez then sacrificed Warner to second base. Greg Matson followed with a single that could only advance Warner to third. Nathan Ford then ripped a double down the left-field line that plated Warner and got Matson to third with one out. After a Doug West strikeout, Matson scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Skylar Brewer extended the inning by singling in Ford.

From there it was cruise control for Campbell, who was rarely in trouble. The real threat came in the fifth when the Longhorns got runners on second and third with one out. Campbell struck out Tony Piha and walked the next hitter to set up a showdown with former Oak Shane Parsons. Campbell struck him out to end the inning and the threat.

The Oaks will continue play the next two weeks at home. First up are the Alameda Dirtdogs and then the El Cerrito A's come to Baylands Athletic Center for the season- ending series. In the final series, Gabe Duran will play in his last game as an Oak. He'll officially retire after 10 seasons with the Oaks.
