One more victory and the USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team will not come empty-handed from the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy. The Americans moved closer to clinching a medal after defeating Germany, 8-5, on Tuesday. Team USA used eight different goal scorers and stifling defense to improve to 4-0 in tourney play. Next up will be the Spain/Canada winner on Thursday.

Germany took command early in the game with the first goal at the 5:22 mark on a counter attack. Two minutes later, the United States answered as Adam Wright converted a penalty shot. Germany used a man advantage moments later to retake the lead at 2-1 with 1:50 to play in the period.

The second quarter saw just one goal in what ultimately was a low scoring first half. The lone tally came near the end of the period as, on a power play, a long shot bounced off the cage back to Tony Azevedo, who quickly passed to fellow Stanford grad Peter Varellas for a 2-2 game.

Team USA pulled ahead for good when Jeff Powers got free inside and hit on a turnaround shot for a 5-3 lead at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter. Then, following a Germany kickout, Brian Alexander worked in on the near side and found the cage for the eventual game-winner at 6-3.
