Mens Water Polo
SoCal Black 11, Stanford Red 18s 6
Date of competition: Tuesday, July 28, 2009
The Stanford Red 18s will play for third place at the S&R Sport Junior Olympics water polo tournament following an 11-6 loss to top-seeded SoCal Black in the semifinals on Tuesday morning at Stanford's Avery Pool. Stanford (5-1) will play San Diego Shores for third place. Shores lost to Lamorinda in the other morning semifinal, 6-5. Coincidently, Stanford defeated Lamorinda on Monday, 7-4.
SoCal Black charged to a 5-1 first-quarter lead and never was threatened, even when Stanford clawed back to get to within two goals (8-6) on a goal by David Culpan with 1:44 left to play. From there, SoCal Black converted three straight power plays to pull away.
Stanford, which finished third in last summer's JOs, got three goals from Stanford-bound Paul Rudolph, who otherwise was held in check by a tight SoCal defense. Rudolph's final goal, a five-meter penalty shot, brought Stanford to within 7-5 but SoCal scored just 24 seconds later.
