Mens Water Polo
Stanford Red 16s 10, SoCal Black 3
Date of competition: Tuesday, July 28, 2009
Playing arguably its best match of the tournament, the Stanford Red 16s cruised past SoCal Black, 10-3, and into the championship match of the S&R Sport Junior Olympics water polo tournament at Stanford on Tuesday. Stanford (6-1) will play SET (Saddleback El Toro) in the title game at 4 p.m. It will be a rematch of Monday's quarterfinals, where SET rallied for a 7-6 victory.
Stanford, which captured last summer's national JO title in the 16s, grabbed a 5-2 halftime lead and held an 8-3 advantage after three quarters. Mark Garner scored three goals for Stanford while Philip Bamberg and Thomas Agramonte added two each. Great passing and teamwork accounted for many of Stanford's goals while a suffocating defense shut down SoCal Black. Stanford goalie Keegan Williams had eight saves. Stanford scored four unanswered goals during the end of the third quarter and into the fourth to easily pull away and make the finals for the second straight season.
