With one swing of the bat, B.J. Boyd sent the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 15-year-old all stars on in the Northern California state tournament with an 8-5 win over Rohnert Park on Sunday afternoon at Burke Field in Antioch.
With wins in its first two games of the state tournament, Palo Alto earned a day off on Monday and will play Woodland on Tuesday at 6:30.
Tied 5-5 in the seventh inning, Boyd crushed a two-run homer to win the game for Palo Alto. Matt Martella begin the inning with a single before Boyd brought him with the big fly.
Palo Alto added an insurance run later in the seventh when Tucker Jorgensen doubled and was brought in on a base hit by Travis McHugh.
Jorgensen's double was one of two hits on the day for him. Dylan Cook and Boyd also had two hits on Sunday.
In a back-and-forth game, Palo Alto led 3-1 in the top of the sixth with two outs and runners on second and third. Sam Falkenhagen knocked a pinch-hit double, bringing in both runs and extending Palo Alto's lead to 5-1.
However, Rohnert Park was undeterred by the larger margin and scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game back up at five.
Jordan Piha started the game for Palo Alto, pitching five innings and giving up just one run. Graham Marchant came in to relieve Piha and Matt Eastman closed the game out in the seventh inning.
