Palo Alto 11, Woodland 1
Date of competition: Tuesday, July 21, 2009
In a tremendous showing of offense, the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14-year-old all stars routed host Woodland 11-1 Tuesday night in the Northern California state tournament, held at Clark Field in Woodland. After losing its first game of the tournament, Palo Alto has since won its past three games to remain alive in the state tournament, and now advances to the losers' bracket final, held Wednesday at six.
Contrary to Monday's game in which Palo Alto only got four hits in a 4-1 win, the Palo Alto bats exploded for 16 hits on Tuesday, allowing the game to be ended in six innings due to the ten-run rule.
Tyler VauDell started the game for Palo Alto, and aided his own cause by going 3-for-3 with a double and driving in three runs. VauDell got great support from his teammates including Nick Wells, who also had three hits and brought in two runs.
With all the offensive support, VauDell needed to merely prevent a slugfest from Woodland to win the game. Instead, Vaudell threw four innings of perfect pitching, not allowing a single Woodland runner to reach base.
