Brought to the brink of elimination, the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 13-year-old all stars managed to pull out a close 7-6 victory over Oakland Monday night in the Northern California state tournament, held in Alameda. Palo Alto required eight innings to get the win, and now will face host Alameda on Tuesday afternoon at two.

Tied 6-6 after the regulation seven innings, Palo Alto scored its winning run in the eighth on the legs of Mikey Diekroeger. Diekroeger reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a two-out single by Keenan Carr. Carr's hit extended the inning, bringing up James Foug who lined a 2-and-2 pitch into left field. Diekroeger rounded third and scored on a close play at the plate.

Kyle Wallau shut down Oakland in the bottom half of the eighth to secure the victory and send Palo Alto in the losers' bracket semifinal.

Palo Alto got nine hits from nine different players on Monday with four players roping doubles. Of the five Palo Alto players with RBI, Wallau was the only player with two RBI, coming on a two-RBI double in the first inning, in which Palo Alto jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
