The Palo Alto Oaks needed a doubleheader sweep to guarantee a spot in the 2009 Stan Musial state playoffs and did just that on Sunday by taking two from the Menlo Park Legends at the Baylands Athletic Center. The Oaks won the second game, 7-0, as Matt Campbell pitched a beautiful three-hit shutout.

Campbell was nearly unhittable as he allowed three hits and zero runs. The Oaks got things going in the top of the first when Evan Warner led off with a sharp single. After Jeff Ramirez sacrificed Warner to second, Warner stole third and scored on an infield ground out.

The Oaks scored four more in the third inning when Nathan Ford led off the inning with a single to center. Doug West then doubled down the left-field line. The wheels came off for the Legends when a routine ground ball was hit to their shortstop, who launched a throw over the first baseman's head to allow both Ford and West to score. Skylar Brewer, who hit the ball to short, then advanced to second. A passed ball advanced Brewer to third base. The bad luck continued for the Legends when Ben Parnes hit a grounder to the first baseman, who threw home to try and stop Brewer. Brewer alertly retreated back to third and no out was recorded. Tyler Finley then plated Brewer with a single and that was followed by an Justin Freitas single to round out the scoring in the third.

The Oaks struck again in the fourth inning when Parnes led off with a single. Finley was hit by a pitch and Joe Ramirez knocked in Parnes with a sharp single to left. Adam Lanthier then brought home Finley with a single up the middle.

The state playoffs will begin this Friday in Sacramento.
