With a chance at revenge against the same Hayward team that eliminated the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14-year-old all stars from the Northern California state tournament a year ago, Palo Alto fell a run short. In their opening game of the state tournament, Palo Alto was unable to hold on to an early led and lost 5-4 to Hayward on Saturday in Woodland.
Palo Alto jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but two runs in each the fifth and the sixth for Hayward cost Palo Alto the game.
For Palo Alto, the first four innings went spectacular with Tyler Vaudell shutting down Hayward and the Palo alto bats scoring in three of the four innings.
Leading the offensive surge was Clay Carey and Nick Wells who delivered in runs for Palo Alto with big hits.
However, after four innings the game went through a delay because the triple-digit heat caused a fan to collapse. After the delay, Palo Alto was unable to pick up where it left off.
Hayward took advantage of walks with some clutch hitting of its own to grab the lead in the sixth for good.
The loss dropped Palo Alto in the losers' bracket to play Elk Grove on Sunday morning.
