South 28, North 28
Date of competition: Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Palo Alto High graduate Will Brandin threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to help the North deadlock the South, 28-28, in the 35th annual Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game on Wednesday at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.
Trailing 7-6 just before halftime, Brandin threw deep over the middle and into a crowd. The ball was tipped and wound up in the arms of Leigh's Ryan Valentine, who completed the play to give the North a 13-7 halftime lead. Brandin's touchdown strike helped the North accumulate 434 passing yards in the game, which was decided when a 32-yard field-goal attempt by the North was blocked with 11 seconds to play.
Brandin completed four of five passes for 84 yards and the TD. His only incompletion was an interception. He was one of five Palo Alto High grads in the game, the others being defensive back Harry Woolson, linebacker Steven Gargiulo, defensive lineman Andy Maliska and running back Sam Tompkins-Jenkins. Gunn High was represented by linebacker Nikko Jackson.
