For the second consecutive year, the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14-year old all-stars are head to the Northern California State Tournament. The 14s sealed their return trip with an 11-5 victory over host Mountain View at McKelvey Park Saturday afternoon. The victory also gave Palo Alto Babe Ruth its third District 6 title of the year, with the 14s joining the 13s and 15s who won their titles earlier.
After being eliminated from last year's state tournament with a 1-2 record, Palo Alto will look to exceed last year's performance in this year's state tournament, beginning July 18 in Woodland.
After earning a tough 3-2 win over Mountain in the opening game of the tournament, Palo Alto knew their championship foe would be tough. For much of the game, it appeared the two teams were headed for another close finish. Instead, the Palo Alto bats went off in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the District championship.
Palo Alto entered the bottom of the fifth trailing Mountain View 4-3. Mountain View had just taken the lead when Ehren Elder came in to score on an error after leading off the inning with a double. In the bottom half of the inning, Palo Alto got to Mountain View starter Ross Slaney, touching him up for five runs. Palo Alto batted around in the fifth with six of the first seven batters of the inning reaching base.
In the sixth, Palo Alto added to its 8-4 lead with three more runs, including RBI base hits by substitues Charles Grose, Nick Wells, and Jack Witte.
Bench production in many ways defined Palo Alto's success. Palo Alto's bench went 4-for-6 on Saturday with three RBI. Additionally, Chris Rea, who earned a start Saturday with an RBI single off the bench in Thursday's 12-1 win over Bel-Mateo, went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Rea also scored three times. After the game, manager Andrew Shenk awarded Rea with the game ball.
On the mound, Jack Larson started the game for Palo Alto and threw three innings, allowing only one earned run and one hit. Larson was relieved by Clay Carey, who finished the game to earn the win. Carey allowed three earned runs and walked just one batter in four innings of work.
