The Palo Alto 13-year old all-stars became the second Palo Alto Babe Ruth team to win a District 6 championship, defeating Bel-Mateo South 10-5 at Baylands Park on Saturday afternoon.
Palo Alto now advances to the Northern California State Tournament in Alameda beginning July 18.
For the second straight game Palo Alto knocked off Bel-Mateo South, albeit by a closer margin than Thursday's 19-1 thrashing.
Despite a slow start, Palo Alto managed to run away with the game, scoring eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Palo Alto had eight hits in those two innings and took advantage of four Bel-Mateo errors to transform a tight 2-1 game into a 10-1 blowout. Five Palo Alto players picked up RBI in the rally.
Until Palo Alto broke the game open late, Bel-Mateo was proving much tougher than they had been on Thursday. Starting pitcher Blake Peters only allowed four hits in the first four innings and only walked one.
Palo Alto got its first runs of the game in the first inning when, with two outs, Michael Tinsley tripled to deep center and then stole home. Mikey Diekroeger singled and stole second before scoring on an error.
From there however, the Palo Alto bats died down, and Bel-Mateo managed to get a run back in the top of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Keaton Moore singled and came around to score on a single by Christian Santos.
Just as a the game appeared to be going down to the wire, Palo Alto broke it open with eight straight runs.
Bel-Mateo attempted a rally in the seventh inning, and managed to plate four runs, two of them coming in on a double by Peters. Still, the margin was too much, and Palo Alto, for the second consecutive year, took the District 6 13-year-old championship.
