Advanced Technology Ventures held on to defeat Wells Fargo 8-7 on Wednesday night to win the 2009 Palo Alto Babe Ruth 13s City Tournament championship game, 8-4.

With one out in the seventh inning, ATV looked to have the championship wrapped up when Wells Fargo attempted a large comeback attempt, scoring three runs. With still only one out and the bases loaded, pitcher Casey McDonald got a strikeout and then induced a fly ball to right field to end the Wells Fargo threat and clinch the championship for ATV. ATV's offense was spread throughout the batting order, with six player picking up RBI. Jack Heneghan came up with a big hit for ATV when, with the game tied 3-3 and two away, Heneghan lined a double down the leftfield line that scored two.

Up 5-4 in the sixth, ATV seemed to put the game away when they scored three runs without a single hit. ATV took advantage of two walks and two errors to take an 8-4 lead. After Wells Fargo's comeback attempt, those three runs became incredibly crucial. Wells Fargo found the bulk of its offense in the the middle of its order, as three-hitter Mikey Diekroeger and four-hitter Jack Cleasby combined for five RBI. Diekroeger went two-for-two on the game and reached base all four times he came to the plate. He also had a double in the top of the third and later scored to tie the game at three.

ATV starter Brett Moriarty picked up the win with three innings of work. In those three innings, he allowed only one earned run on three hits and struck out two.
