Stanford sophomore-to-be Chad La Tourette smashed the meet record while winning the men's 800-meter freestyle on the opening night of the Santa Clara International Grand Prix swim meet at the George F. Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara on Thursday night.
La Tourette clocked 7:53.56 to erase the previous meet record of 7:57.73 by U.S. Olympian Erik Vendt in 2004. La Tourette barely held off Australia's Robert Hurley, who finished second in 7:53.87, also under the old meet mark. Stanford sophomore-to-be Bobby Bollier of the Kansas City Blazers was 12th in 8:15.04 while Sacred Heart Prep sophomore-to-be Tom Kremer of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics was 29th in 8:38.00.
