A perfect season for the Palo Alto Oaks came to an end after three games when they dropped the second game of a doubleheader with the Morgan Hill Mudcats on Sunday at Baylands Athletic Center. Palo Alto (3-1) won the opener, 11-5, but dropped the nightcap, 4-3.

In the second game, Matt Campbell cruised through five innings giving up no runs and only three hits. Campbell struck out nine and picked off two. Adam Lanthier came in to relieve Campbell and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. By this time the Oaks had scraped out three runs and had a 3-0 lead going into the final inning. Sean Scott plated Jeff Ramirez with a second inning triple. Menlo-Atherton grad Skylar Brewer knocked in Ramirez in the fourth with a long single to deep center, and Beres scored Kevin Becker with an RBI single in the fifth.

In the seventh inning, however, Lanthier got an easy ground out and a strike out to start the inning. But a walk was followed by a single and a double. The next batter walked, bringing up the top of the order for the Mudcats. Lanthier quickly got an 0-2 count and then threw a perfect outside fastball that looked to end the game, but the umpire didn't call it. The at-bat ended in a walk to load the bases. The Oaks' unbeaten season ended on the next pitch to Jose Avila, who hit a sharp ground ball to Scott as shortstop. Scott made the force at second base, but the ball got away and two runs crossed the plate to end the game.

Palo Alto will return to Baylands this Sunday to take on the Salinas Knights at 11:30 a.m.
