The Gunn boys' track and field team performed better than expected while Palo Alto came up short of expectations at the SCVAL De Anza Division Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Los Gatos High. The Titans showed up big time in the field events and added some expected points in the sprints to finish with 74 points in second, trailing only heavily favored Mountain View (105.33). Palo Alto, which had a slim outside chance to possible tie for the overall title, didn't come close while finishing a disappointing sixth with just 49.33 points.

Gunn senior Charles Chisom defended his title in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 11.07. He came back with a solid 22.44 second place in the 200, clocking the same time as winner Winton Nguyen of Milpitas. Chisom also ran on the Titans' third-place 400 relay that clocked 44.55 to finish just behind Paly's second-place 44.11.

Senior Marcus Anderson tied his personal best in the high jump with a winning effort of 6-4 while teammate Ryo Asai took third at 6-2. Gunn junior Kazzie Hill surpassed his No. 2 seed mark by winning the long jump at 20-11. And to top it off, Gunn junior Spencer Jones threw a season-best 140-6 to win the discus.

Palo Alto had only one individual winner, junior Philip MacQuitty in the 3,200. He ran a solid 9:22.18, his second-fastest time this season, to win by nearly six seconds over Gunn junior Paul Summers (9:28.04). Both finished ahead of Mountain View junior Garrett Rowe, a well-beaten third in 9:41.47 after taking ill following his victory in the 1,600 earlier in the meet. Paly's Paul Brown was second in the 400 in 50.85 and third in 200 in 22.80, in addition to running on the 400 relay team.
