It took nearly a week, but the Palo Alto boys' tennis team finally was able to celebrate its first SCVAL De Anza Division title since 1994 following a 6-1 triumph over host Homestead on Monday.

The Vikings (11-1, 19-3) put things in motion by upending first-place Saratoga on April 21 with a crucial 5-2 triumph. That put Paly in position to clinch no worse than a co-title when it defeated visiting Gunn on April 23. The Vikings did just that with a 7-0 triumph.

Despite those two victories, the title still was up for grabs. Palo Alto had a makeup match at Homestead to complete, and the teams met Monday to finally wrap up the regular season. With the Vikings sweeping the doubles and winning three of four singles, the long-awaited championship was secured. Senior Sam Wong, who won three times last week, continued his fine play with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 1 singles, as Baramee Wongbanchai did not play.

With Wong moving up a position, so did freshman Nicky Hu, who produced a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2. Senior John Mitchell came through at No. 4 and the doubles were dominant. Dan Schwartz and Drew Pearson won at No. 1, Peter Tseng and Alan Chen at No. 2 and Chase Cooper teamed with Alex Freeman to win at No. 3.

Interestingly, Palo Alto did not win De Anza Division titles in '95 and '96 when the Vikings won Central Coast Section crowns. Monta Vista won the division titles both seasons and then were beaten in the CCS tournament. Palo Alto's top individuals joined those from Gunn for the SCVAL Individual Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.
