Varsity Boys Tennis
Palo Alto 5, Saratoga 2
Date of competition: Tuesday, April 21, 2009
The Palo Alto boys' tennis team accomplished quite a lot with a 5-2 victory over visiting Saratoga on Tuesday in a key boys' tennis match. The Vikings (9-1, 17-3), barring an upset loss to visiting Gunn on Thursday, will win the outright championship in the SCVAL De Anza Division by virtue of having more points in the two matches with the Falcons this season. Paly lost the first meeting 4-3, but had eight total points to Saratoga's six.
Senior Sam Wong clinched the victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Eric Gast. That put Paly in position to win its first title during coach Andy Harader's 12-year tenure. Palo Alto led at that point, 4-2, but sophomore Baramee Wongbanchai picked up a victory at No. 1 singles instead of playing a third set when his opponent defaulted. Peter Tseng and Grant Audet rallied for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to put Wong in position for the clinching victory.
The loss effectively ended Saratoga's season because the Falcons have been declared ineligible to compete in the postseason after failing to show up for the NorCal playoffs last season.
The other benefit of the Vikings' big victory is they now could possibly earn a No. 2 seed in the Central Coast Section playoffs should Menlo beat Bellarmine on Wednesday in a big nonleague showdown at the Decathlon Club.
