No one was happier to see Menlo move into the West Bay Athletic League than Menlo-Atherton co-head coach Carlos Aguilar. After all, the Knights never lost a PAL Bay Division match while they were in the league.
"Had not Menlo joined the PAL, we would have already had a league title in the 21st century," said Aguilar.
That long title drought is about to end. The only question now is whether the Bears will finish off the regular season undefeated. Menlo-Atherton (10-0, 12-3) is three victories away from accomplishing that feat following a 7-0 rout of visiting Woodside on Monday.
With a two-game lead over second-place Burlingame, the Bears can clinch no worse than a tie for the Bay Division title with a win at Half Moon Bay on Tuesday. The Bears also will visit Mills on Wednesday and Aragon on Thursday to close out the PAL campaign. The Bears need to win two of the three to claim their first title of any kind since the 1980s.
"If we win out -- going undefeated -- it will be ever more sweet," Aguilar said. "We are superstitious, so it ain't over 'till it's over."
Menlo-Atherton's league season is even more special this season because the Bears graduated a handful of seniors and had to start four freshmen in doubles this season. Those freshmen, who Aguilar likes to call the "Fantastic Four", have been a real strength for the Bears this season. Twins Jesse and Christian Perkins have held forth at No. 2 doubles while Zeke Brown and Matt Giordano have dominated at No. 3. Throw in senior George Horowitz at No. 2 and sophomore Alec Haley at No. 1 and the Bears have been too tough for the rest of the Bay Division this season.
