Varsity Boys Tennis
Sacred Heart Prep 6, Gunn 1
Date of competition: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
The Sacred Heart Prep boys' tennis team continued to improve and fine-tune things with a 6-1 nonleague triumph over host Gunn on Tuesday in blustery wind conditions. The Gators improved to 11-5 overall heading into a makeup match with Pinewood on Wednesday. The pace quickens on Monday when Sacred Heart Prep plays host to Palo Alto in an important nonleague match at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that match likely could earn the No. 3 or 4 seed in the Central Coast Section playoffs, depending (perhaps) on where Carmel is seeded.
The Gators likely had more trouble with the wind than with the Titans (4-13) as SHP lost only at No. 4 singles where Clifton Wolak knocked off the Gators' Nick Pizzuti, 6-4, 6-0. SHP swept the top three singles in straight sets and had only one doubles match (at No. 2) go to three sets. That's where Mario Paganini and Colin Kelly topped Gunn's Simon Kaubisch and Carter Deggelman, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sacred Heart Prep 6, at Gunn 1

Doubles -- Westerfield-Robinson (SHP) d. Meyer-McKenzie, 7-5, 6-2; Paganini-Kelly (SHP) d. Kaubisch-Deggelman, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Scherba-Bell (SHP) d. Lu-Lui, 6-2, 6-1.
Records: Sacred Heart Prep 11-5; Gunn 4-13
