Varsity Boys Tennis
Menlo-Atherton 6, San Mateo 1
Date of competition: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
With winds blowing at nearly 50 miles an hour, the playing field was leveled as first-place Menlo-Atherton visited San Mateo for a PAL Bay Division boys' tennis match on Tuesday. Despite the inclimate conditions, the Bears prevailed with a 6-1 victory to set up a showdown with second-place Burlingame on Wednesday for the regular-season league title.
Menlo-Atherton will take an 8-0 division record (10-3 overall) into the rescheduled match (3:30 p.m.) with Burlingame, which has only one league loss this season -- to the Bears. Menlo-Atherton still has three league matches remaining after Burlingame, but all are against teams the Bears have beaten convincingly this season.
Against San Mateo, the Bears lost only at No. 1 singles but swept the other three. In doubles, however, Menlo-Atherton was forced to three sets in all three matches before pulling them out. The tandems of Avinash Shah-Takai Tuionetoa at No. 1 and freshmen Matt Giordano-Zeke Brown at No. 3 won their third sets, 7-5.
