Varsity Boys Tennis
Menlo 4, Palo Alto 3
Date of competition: Wednesday, April 1, 2009
The Menlo and Palo Alto tennis teams rank among the best in the Central Coast Section this season, and the Knights' 4-3 nonleague victory over the Vikings did nothing to change that on Wednesday. Menlo (12-2) played without junior Jamin Ball, sidelined by illness, and still overcame a talented Palo Alto team (11-3) that pushed the Knights to the limit in the marathon match that took nearly three hours to complete. In the end, it was sophomore Andrew Carlisle clinching the victory with a 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 triumph over Paly senior Dan Schwartz, who suffered leg cramps late in third set.
Menlo grabbed a 3-1 lead with the three remaining matches headed for a third set. Palo Alto needed to win all three to pull out the victory and nearly did. Paly sophomore Baramee Wongbanchai finished off a comeback at No. 2 singles to beat Patrick Chase, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, and draw the Vikings closer at 3-2. Before Paly's Grant Audet and Alex Freeman could finish off Menlo's No. 3 doubles tandem of Zach Chase and Brian Peltz, Carlisle wrapped things up with his victory over Schwartz.
