Varsity Boys Tennis
Menlo-Atherton 4, Burlingame 3
Date of competition: Tuesday, March 31, 2009
Menlo-Atherton grabbed control of the PAL Bay Division boys' tennis race by upending previously unbeaten Burlingame, 4-3, on Tuesday on the Panthers' courts. The Bears improved to 8-0 in league (10-3 overall).
Menlo-Atherton looked in good shape early as Alec Haley won at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-3) and the Bears' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams also won quickly. The victory seemed all wrapped up when M-A's No. 1 doubles team of junior Avinash Shah and senior Takai Tuionetoa grabbed a 6-1, 5-2 lead. Burlingame's No. 1 tandem, however, battled back and won the second set with a tiebreaker to force a third and deciding third set. Shah and Tuionetoa buckled down and secured the team victory with a 7-6 triumph.
