Bill Shine gathered his Menlo School tennis players together following a nonleague victory over visiting Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday and offered up some insight on the Knights’ next opponent. “Do you realize that no one on this team has ever beaten Prep?” Shine asked his team, in reference to his team’s drought against local rival Sacred Heart Prep.

Shine was correct and his message caught his players off guard. “They all looked at each other,” Shine said. “It kind of stunned them.” The Menlo players let the message sink in and then went out and did something about it on Thursday, stunning host Sacred Heart Prep, 6-1, in a key West Bay Athletic League match against the only undefeated teams in league play.

“It was nice to get a win over them,” Shine said of the Gators (5-1, 7-4). “They’ve been beating us up and down the last three years.” Menlo (6-0, 11-2) left no doubt to which was the better team on Thursday by sweeping the singles matches, three in straight sets and with only eight games lost. Only Patrick Chase went to a third set, winning a super tiebreaker over John Parsons.

It was only last season when Sacred Heart Prep won Central Coast Section and NorCal championships and now Menlo wants to be that team. The Knights will continue their preparations with a big nonleague test against visiting Palo Alto (11-1) next Wednesday.
