Bill Shine wasn't happy to see the Menlo boys' basketball team lose its NorCal Division IV opener on Tuesday, but the Knights' tennis coach didn't mind receiving the fallout from the first-round loss. With basketball done, Shine got two of his tennis players back -- Daniel Hoffman and Mac Osborne -- and both contributed to a 7-0 nonleague victory over host Gunn on Wednesday.

"It's nice to get the basketball players back," said Shine, who's still missing one player, Max Glenn, who suffered a knee injury during the hoop season and likely will miss the entire tennis schedule.

Even without Glenn, Menlo looks solid and played that way against Gunn. Hoffman, who scored six points in a 60-45 loss to St. Mary's (Berkeley) on Tuesday night, polished off Gunn's Ishan Bhadkamkar, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles less than 24 hours later. Osborne teamed with Kyle Sum at No. 2 doubles for a 6-4, 7-5 victory as Menlo improved to 3-0 this season.
