LPM Outlasts Hengehold in an Extra-Inning Season Opener! Palo Alto Little League opened its 2009 season with a well-played nailbiter Saturday afternoon, March 7. Hengehold’s superstar pitcher, Danny Erlich, pitched like a champion for 2 2/3 innings, allowing only 1 hit – a triple by LPM’s slugger Roy Shadmon who then scored on a passed ball. LPM’s Sean Stem shut out the top of Hengehold’s order in the 1st, but timely hitting by Hengehold’s Ellis Obrien in the 2nd put Hengehold ahead 2-1. Hengehold’s Guy Kaznik doubled to lead off the 3rd, and after stealing 3rd scored on a fielder’s choice. Undaunted, LPM managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd. After a pitching change by Hengehold with 2 out in the bottom of the 3rd, LPM’s Ravi Levens singled, setting up Roy Shadmon’s booming 2-run homer beyond the center field picnic area. LPM’s Shadmon and Hengehold’s Ellis Obrien pitched shut out ball from there out, sending the game into extra innings as both teams’ defenses showed impressive early-season strength. Ravi Levens took the mound for LPM in the 7th, pitching 2 shut-out innings. For Hengehold, Aiden “Guppy” Von Vleck pitched well in relief in the 8th, but Ravi Levens’ lead off single ultimately led to the game-winning run.
