The 5th seeded Gunn girls varsity volleyball team started their title defense at the CCS Division 1 tournament with a 25-10, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 win against Piedmont Hills on Saturday afternoon, in what is possibly the final game at Titan Gym this season. Gunn used a lot of (Kaylin) Hallada -- 43 attempts in total -- as the senior outside hitter led the team with 12 kills. Sophomore opposite hitter Sophie Hahn had an extremely efficient night with 11 kills and 0 errors in 23 attempts for a .478 hitting efficiency, and fittingly won the final two points for the Titans. Senior libero Micaela Leong led the team with 11 digs, followed by Hallada's 10, while setters Hannah Zhang and Kyra Xue each had 18 assists. The Titans now travel to the 4th seeded Monta Vista for a 7pm Tue quarterfinal match, and hope to repeat the magic from two years ago, when the 6th seeded Gunn recorded back to back road wins to return to Titan Gym for the final, upsetting #3, #2, #1 seeds in order to win the whole thing. Leong and Junior Heidi Purnama are the only remaining members of that team.

After a lopsided opening set, the Pirates made the match interesting by managing to split the tightly contested middle two sets, using better passing to unleash deadly quick attacks. But in the 4th set, the Piedmont passers could not stop the A-Train, as Junior Avery Yun served 9 points in a row, including 3 aces, to put the set virtually out of reach. Yun finished the match with 4 aces, as did Leong.
