The Palo Alto girls' soccer team advanced to the championship match of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs following a 1-0 semifinal victory over No. 2 seed Woodside on Wednesday at Valley Christian High in San Jose. The No. 6-seeded Vikings (12-7-4) will face No. 1 seed Monta Vista (16-3-3) in Saturday's title match at 10 a.m., also at Valley Christian. The Matadors advanced with a 2-0 semifinal victory over No. 5 Gunn.

Paly junior Maeve Stewart scored off a corner-kick opportunity in the 57th minute for the winning goal. Senior Jessie Duller took the corner with junior Kelly Jenks getting her head on it, knocking it roughly halfway between herself and the goal. This prompted Woodside keeper Emily Kruger to come out of the box to approach the ball in play. Instead of Kruger getting to the ball, Stewart reached it first and headed the ball over the keeper -- too far out of the goal at this point to completely protect it and not far enough out to make the save.

Palo Alto and Monta Vista played twice during the SCVAL De Anza Division season with each team winning once. The Vikings won on artificial turf but lost on natural grass. Saturday's match will be on artificial turf, and marks the first time in school history that two Paly soccer teams will play for CCS titles in the same season. The top-seeded Palo Alto boys also will compete for the Division I crown, against No. 2 Bellarmine at Milpitas High.

The Palo Alto girls will be playing in their first CCS finale since 1989 while hoping to win their first outright section crown since 1980. Paly shared a CCS title in 1981-82.

At Valley Christian
Palo Alto 0 1 -- 1
Woodside 0 0 -- 0
Palo Alto -- Stewart (Duller, Jenks).
Records: Palo Alto 12-7-4; Woodside finishes season 15-3-4
