The top-seeded Palo Alto boys' soccer team advanced to the Central Coast Section Division I championship match with a 4-3 double-overtime victory over No. 4 Watsonville on Tuesday at Milpitas High. The Vikings (21-1-2) will face No. 2 and defending Division I champ Bellarmine (17-3-5), which eliminated No. 11 Gunn, 2-0, in the other semifinal on Tuesday at Milpitas.
With Palo Alto trailing 3-2 and down to the final minute of regulation, Elliot Sanborn fired a flip throwin into a host of players near the Watsonville goal. David Munoz, the Wildcatz keeper, couldn't get his hands on the ball as it somehow sailed into the net to deadlock the match.
Paly's Jenner Fox, who earlier had mistakenly headed a ball into his own goal, made up for the own goal in the 94th minute by feeding Spencer Sims on the winning breakaway goal, and Palo Alto held on for the win. Sanborn also had an assist along with his throw-in goal.
For Palo Alto, this will be its third straight appearance in a CCS championship match. The Vikings played in back-to-back Division II finales the past two seasons and dropped both.
Watsonville's three goals were the most the Vikings have allowed all season. Paly senior keeper Peter Johnson gave up just one goal during 12 SCVAL De Anza Division matches this season during which the Vikings went 11-0-1. Paly and Bellarmine will meet on Saturday at Milpitas to decide the section title.
