Date of competition: Thursday, February 27, 2020
The Menlo-Atherton Bears varsity baseball team won their season opener yesterday against Serra. The Padres got on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Bears responded in the top of the third inning when John Quinlan hit a solo home run to right field to tie the game at 1-1. The Bears jumped back out in front in the top of the fourth when Rowen Barnes singled to right field to drive in a run and Cade Galles doubled off the left field wall to plate two more runs for a 4-1 lead. Serra responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game back up 4-4, until Tyler Nelson’s sacrifice fly the following inning put the Bears back on top 5-4. The Padres threatened again late in the game, but the Bears responded with solid pitching and defense. Nate Baxter held the Padres scoreless in relief (3.1 IP, 2H) to get the win. Next game for the Bears: March 3rd at Sacred Heart Prep.
