Varsity Girls Soccer
Priory 3, Mercy-Burlingame 1
Date of competition: Thursday, February 12, 2009
The Priory girls' soccer team bounced back from Tuesday's disappointing loss to Sacred Heart Prep and beat host Mercy-Burlingame on Thursday, 3-1, to close its West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) regular season. The Panthers (10-2, 14-5-1) now await the Central Coast Section seeding meeting on Saturday.
"At this point, CCS pairing will be tough," said Priory coach Armando del Rio. "Some good teams this year -- SHP, Menlo, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley."
Del Rio will find out on Tuesday if standout scorer Massiel Castellanos will be available for the playoffs. She has been sidelined most of the season with a stress fracture. Senior Sarah Montgomery also is injured, but is playing. Alex Schnabel missed the loss to Sacred Heart Prep with an injury, but likely will be ready for the postseason.
Against Mercy, freshman Eugenia Jernick got the Panthers rolling with a goal assisted by Adriana Cortes, who then provided the game-winner on a header with freshman Darrah Shields assisting. Senior Leslie Barkmann drilled the final goal from nearly midfield.
